Amsterdam – The artist Francisco Camacho will petition the Dutch parliament to open civil marriage to allow for a group of citizens to marry each other. The Group Marriage Initiative is part of the art festival “My Name is Spinoza,” commissioned by the Foundation Spinoza Center Amsterdam and organized by the Spinoza Society in collaboration with SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Space).

Today in the Netherlands, there are no socio-economic, cultural or moral obstacles to the existence of group marriages. Free citizens should be able to decide how many people they want to share their lives with. Francisco Camacho’s Group Marriage Initiative declares to the elected representatives of the Netherlands that they must act.

By the end of September 2009, the petition must have 40,000 signatures in order to change the laws that prohibit group marriage. Then Parliament must address the topic, and ultimately enact new legislation.

A group marriage has the same principles as a civil marriage, only with more than two people. Anyone who, for whatever reason, prefers to share their life with more than one partner, has the right to be recognized by the State and to be accepted by society.

Francisco Camacho hopes that this project creates a discussion on how the Dutch state ensures the freedom of its citizens and prevents the marginalization of certain groups. For this project the artist will organize a symbolic group wedding, a film screening, and a number of debates and interviews on the significance of group marriage for the family, society and sexuality.

From May 9 until the end of June, Camacho’s Group Marriages Initiative holds office in the INKIJK located on the Ruysdaelkade 2 in Amsterdam.

The Group Marriage Initiative is part of the art manifestation “My name is Spinoza” commissioned by Foundation Spinoza Center Amsterdam and is organized by the Spinoza Society in collaboration with SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Space).
